Self-esteem

In today’s world, we’re overloaded with messages about how we should look and behave, which is why self-esteem is something that many of us struggle with. But maintaining a positive self image is critical for our mental health and overall well-being.

What is the meaning of self-esteem?

Self-esteem refers to our overall sense of self-worth and our ability to accept and value ourselves. It’s our opinion or judgement of ourselves and our abilities, and it can have a significant impact on our behaviour, emotions, and relationships. When we have high self-esteem, we tend to have positive attitudes and beliefs about ourselves, while low self-esteem brings about feelings of insecurity and inadequacy. It is important to note that self-esteem can fluctuate and can be influenced by external factors such as social interactions and life experiences.

What are the 3 types of self-esteem?

High self-esteem is characterised by a positive self-image and confidence in our abilities. High self-esteem means a healthy balance between self-acceptance and self-improvement.

Moderate self-esteem can mean an inconsistent self-image and self-worth. If we have moderate self-esteem we may have moments of confidence and self-doubt.

Low self-esteem leads to a negative self-image and self-worth. When we have low self-esteem we tend to have a consistently negative self-perception and may have difficulty accepting compliments or positive feedback.
